about

This 2018 single by Eric Anders and Mark O'Bitz is an ode to George Saunders' novel, Lincoln In The Bardo. It was the first song we wrote for the project that became both American Bardo and This Mortal Farce. It was released in demo form almost two years before we released American Bardo. We sent it to George Saunders and he wrote back thanking us for making the song. He also wrote that it was "beautiful."

lyrics

Matterbloomlight
(©2018 Anders/O’Bitz)

Mr. Bevins does not like this matterbloomlight
We see this light when others say goodbye

Mr. Bevins does not call it the matterbloomlight
But how has it mattered for him
to say it right

We fear a long
Eternal night

Oh to matterbloomlight
I say it wrong
Bevins’s right

Oh can’t say goodbye
Stay too long
It ain’t right

Mr. Bevins says we cannot become this light
He may say this cuz he has too many eyes

Mr. Bevins seems to be blind to what is right
And this is why he will not say goodbye

He fears a long
Eternal night

Oh to matterbloomlight
I say it wrong
Bevins’s right

Oh can’t say goodbye
We’ve stayed too long
It ain’t right

Ooh, oh … oh, oh

Oh to matterbloomlight
I say it wrong
But see it right

Oh please say goodbye
Our time is done
No more lies

Oh to matterbloomlight
I help him along
We get it right

Oh we say goodbye
Our time is done
Come alive
To matterbloomlight

Anders/O'Bitz California

Singer-songwriter Eric Anders (right) and guitarist-composer Mark O'Bitz (left) both hail from California. Eric and Mark have been working on music together since Eric's 2003 debut release, Not At One--like all of Eric's solo releases it was mostly Anders/O'Bitz. The guys started releasing music as a duo in 2018 with Of All These Things and have released at least an album every year after that. ... more
